Choose a design you can live with
Your first tattoo can be a small personal symbol, a favourite flower or something purely decorative. Save a few references and note what attracts you: the subject, colours, shading or line weight. Give the idea time. A design does not need a dramatic story, but it should still feel right when the excitement of finding it has settled.
Let the placement shape the design
Think about how visible you want your tattoo to be, then discuss placement and size with an artist. Fine details need enough room to remain readable. Ask how the design may change as it ages. Before tattooing begins, check the stencil in a mirror while standing naturally. Request adjustments if the position or proportions feel wrong.
Choose the artist as carefully as the artwork
Look for a portfolio that consistently shows your preferred style, including healed examples. A consultation should cover the design, price, session length and any deposit or cancellation terms. Ask how the studio handles hygiene and sterilisation. Needles should be sterile and opened in front of you. A professional artist should welcome questions and explain the process clearly.
Plan for the days afterwards
Ask for preparation guidance before your appointment and written aftercare instructions afterwards. Check how healing will fit around work, clothing, sport and travel. Avoid swimming while the tattoo heals, and do not pick or scratch it. Tell the artist about relevant allergies or health conditions; discuss medical concerns with a clinician before booking.
Afterwards, spreading redness, worsening pain, pus or fever need prompt medical attention. Once healed, protect the tattoo from the sun with clothing and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. You can always wait longer before booking. Feeling informed and comfortable matters more than meeting an arbitrary deadline.
